MAGIC WORLD AN ARAB THEME PARK CONCEPT FOR DUBAI, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES Prepared for His Royal Highness General Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Crown Prince of Dubai and UAE Defense Minister, the MAGIC WORLD THEME PARK project was pursued and developed over a number of years in the 1990s. Exline Design was first retained by the projects corporate developerINTERNATIONAL BECHTEL COMPANY LTD., in 1993. At that time, Exline was asked by Michael V. Lee, the projects consulting Creative Director, to assist the BECHTEL team in developing the parks initial creative concept. Then
again in 1997 Exline Design was retained by BECHTEL as an independent consultant
to work creatively and administratively with their inhouse architectural
staff and Los Angeles based showdesign companySPECTRA FX. Exline
worked exclusively for two years both in San Francisco and Los Angeles to
bring the project through schematic design, design development, and finally
through a 90% completion of construction documents. The assignment culminated
in a sevenweek stay in the city of Dubai in an effort to make a worldclass
project presentation to HRH Sheikh Mohammed. The storyline concept for the park was based on a modern myth created exclusively for the project. It describes a fiery ball falling from the dark heavens and crashing into a forgotten region of the Dubian desert. The impact of the meteorite caused a vast crater to form. After the ash had settled and many years passed, life began to spring from this once barren land at the bottom of the crater. Jungles formed, waterfalls crashed from towering crater walls, and a great ring of water encircled the new landform. The sands and sky began to glisten with life... but not ordinary life... for the changes were somewhat startling and certainly magical. Various small and curious creatures settled into what became four unique villages within the crater: Legend Lagoon, Ancient Village, Dino Canyon, and Techtown. These fantasybased villages became the distinctive entertainment zones that organized this fullscale Middle Eastern theme park concept.
